Ganda
People of S Uganda who speak Luganda, a Bantu language of the Benue-Congo group. Numbering 3.7 million, the Ganda are Uganda's largest ethnic group. Traditionally hoe cultivators, they also grow cotton and coffee for export and keep livestock. In the 19th cent. the Ganda developed the centralized state known as Buganda.
Granada
City (pop., 1992 est.: 256,200; metro area pop. 1995: 273,000), capital of Granada province, Andalusia, S Spain. Located at the NW slope of the Sierra Nevada, it was the site of the Iberian settlement Elibyrge in the 5th cent. BC and of the Roman Illiberis. As the seat of the Moorish kingdom of Granada, it was the final stronghold of the Moors in Spain, until 1492. Nearby is the Alhambra, as well as the Alcazaba fortress that guarded it. The city has fine Renaissance, baroque, and neoclassical architecture and is a major tourist center. It has been the see of an archbishop since 1493; the Univ. of Granada was founded in 1526.
Grandi
Italian politician. He made an unsuccessful bid for leadership of Italy's Fascists in 1921, losing to B. Mussolini, but then held a succession of high government posts (1924-43), incl. foreign minister (1929-33). In July 1943, as chair of the Grand Council of Fascism, he attacked Mussolini and proposed a motion of no confidence; passage of the resolution deposed Mussolini. Grandi fled to Lisbon, then moved to Brazil, but eventually returned to Italy.
