cherry
Any of various trees of the genus Prunus, and their edible fruits. Most are native to the Northern Hemisphere, where they are widely grown. Three types are grown mainly for their fruit: sweet cherries (P. avium); sour, or tart, cherries (P. cerasus); and, to a much lesser extent, dukes (crosses of sweet and sour cherries). Sweet-cherry trees are large and bear fruit that is generally heart-shaped to nearly globular, varies in color from yellow through red to nearly black, and has a low acid content. Sour-cherry trees are smaller and bear fruit that is round to oblate, generally dark red, and too acidic to eat fresh. Dukes are intermediate in both tree and fruit characteristics. The wood of some cherry species is especially esteemed for the manufacture of fine furniture. Ornamental varieties selected for the beauty of their flowers are a common feature of gardens.
curry
(from Tamil kari, "sauce") Food, dish, or sauce in Indian cuisine seasoned with curry powder, a mixture of pungent spices incl. turmeric, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, and fenugreek. Some of the curry spices are known for their antiseptic and preservative properties. Curries have been a part of S. Asian cookery since antiquity. In India, such spice mixtures are known as masala. The primarily vegetarian curries of S India are the most pungent, often containing hot chilies. Those of N India, where lamb and poultry are served, avoid hot or pungent ingredients.

U.S. statesman. Born in Marblehead, Mass., he was an early advocate for independence; as a delegate to the Continental Congress, he signed the Declaration of Independence. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1789-93, and in 1797 was sent to France with J. Marshall and C. Pinckney to resolve disputes that resulted in the XYZ Affair. He served as governor of Massachusetts 1810-11; during his term the state legislature redrew the district lines to favor Democratic-Republican candidates against the Federalists, a practice that became known as gerrymandering. In 1812 he advocated war with Britain and was elected vice president on the ticket with J. Madison.
sherry
Fortified wine of Spanish origin. It takes its name from Jerez de la Frontera in Spain. Essential to its taste is the action of flor, a mildewlike growth encouraged by a slight exposure to air after fermentation. Also unique is a system of blending wines of many vintage years. Sherry is fortified after fermentation with high-proof brandy, to 16-18% alcohol. It is served primarily as an aperitif, though sweeter, heavier sherries are used as dessert wines.
