Amon
Egyptian deity revered as king of the gods. Amon may have originated as a local deity at Khmun in Middle Egypt. His cult spread to Thebes, where he became patron of the pharaohs by Mentuhotep I's reign (2008-1957 BC) and was identified with the sun god Re. Represented as a human, a ram, or both, Amon-Re was worshiped with the goddess Mut and the youthful god Khons. Akhenaton directed his reforms against the cult of Amon, but with little success, and Amon's status was restored in the 14th-13th cent. BC. In the New Kingdom, Amon came to be seen as one of a triad with Ptah and Re, and in the 11th-10th cent. BC as a universal god who intervened in affairs of state by speaking through oracles.


Edmonton
City (metro. area pop., 1996: 863,000), capital of Alberta. Located on the N. Saskatchewan River, in the center of the province, it began as a series of fur-trading posts built from 1795. With the arrival of the railway and an influx of settlers in the late 19th cent., Edmonton began to prosper economically, and in 1905 it became the capital of the new province of Alberta. The 1947 discovery of petroleum in the area greatly stimulated the city's growth; an agricultural and oil-based economy still prevails there. It is the distribution center of NW Canada. Its cultural and educational institutions include the Univ. of Alberta (1906).

Country, central Africa. Area: 103,347 sq mi (267,667 sq km). Population (1997 est.): 1,190,000. Capital: Libreville. Gabon has more than 40 ethnic groups: the Fang make up a majority and live N of the Ogooué River; the largest groups south of the river are the Punu, Sira, and Nzebi. Languages: French (official); indigenous languages. Religion: Christianity, primarily Roman Catholicism. Currency: CFA franc. Gabon straddles the equator on the W coast of Africa. It has a narrow coastal plain and becomes hilly in the south and north. The basin of its chief river, the Ogooué , covers most of the country; about three-fourths is equatorial rain forest, which supports numerous plant and animal species. Gabon has reserves of manganese that are among the largest in the world; it also has huge deposits of high-grade iron ore. Gabon has a mixed, developing economy based largely on the exploitation of these mineral and timber resources. Its head of state is the president, and the head of government is the prime minister; the parliament consists of two houses. Artifacts dating from late Paleolithic and early Neolithic times have been found in Gabon, but it is not known when the Bantu speakers who established Gabon's ethnic composition arrived. Pygmies were probably the original inhabitants. The Fang arrived in the late 18th cent. and were followed by the Portuguese and by French, Dutch, and English traders.
