Fuzhou
City (pop., 1990: 875,000), capital of Fujian province, China. Located on the bank of the Min River, it was the capital of the kingdom of Yue in the 2nd cent. BC. Fuzhou, important militarily in the 1st cent. AD, came later under the Tang dynasty. During the Song dynasty (960-1279), it was a center for overseas trade and also an important cultural center. It reached its height of prosperity when it was opened as a treaty port after the Opium War of 1839-42. It is now a center for industrial chemicals. In the city and nearby hills are notable examples of Chinese architecture, incl. pagodas and temples.


foxhound
Either of two breeds of dogs traditionally kept in packs for fox hunting. The English foxhound stands 21-25 in. (53-64 cm) high and weighs 60-70 lbs (27-32 kg). It has a short coat, which is usually a combination of black, tan, and white. The Amer. foxhound resembles the English breed in appearance and size but is more lightly built. It is the oldest breed of sporting dog in the U.S., developed from English foxhounds imported beginning in 1650. Both breeds have been bred for strength, speed, and versatility; they are rarely kept as house pets.


Fuchs
German physicist and spy. He joined the German Communist Party in 1930 but fled Germany after the Nazi takeover in 1933. He settled in Britain, earned a doctorate at the Univ. of Edinburgh, and became a British citizen in 1942. He worked on the atomic bomb in Britain and the U.S. In 1943 he began passing scientific secrets to the Soviet Union, which accelerated Soviet development of the atomic bomb by at least a year. His activities were detected in 1950 and he was imprisoned until 1959. After his release, he moved to E. Germany, where he was appointed deputy director of the Central Institute for Nuclear Research.


fuchsia
Any of about 100 species of flowering shrubs and trees in the genus Fuchsia (family Onagraceae), native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central and S. America and to New Zealand and Tahiti. Several species are grown in gardens as bedding plants, small shrubs, or miniature treelike specimens; others are grown as pot plants or in hanging baskets for indoor or greenhouse cultivation. Fuchsias are valued for their showy pendulous flowers, tubular to bell-shaped, in shades of red and purple to white.

Empress of China of the Tang dynasty. She began her career as the concubine of the emperor Taizong but became the consort of his son. She eliminated her female rivals and became empress in 655. By 660 she had eliminated those who opposed her through dismissal, exile, and execution. Because the emperor was sickly, she was able to rule in his name; after his death she ruled in the name of her sons, at last declaring herself ruler in her own name in 690.
