Bormann
German Nazi leader. He joined the Nazi party in 1925 and served as R. Hess's chief of staff 1933-41. He was appointed head of the party chancellery in 1941 and became one of A. Hitler's closest lieutenants. A shadowy but extremely powerful presence, Bormann controlled all legislation, party promotions and appointments, and the personal access of others to Hitler. He disappeared shortly after Hitler's death. Though some reports allege that he escaped to S. America, German authorities have officially declared him dead.
Bowman
English surgeon and histologist. His studies of organ tissues with his teacher Robert Todd led to major papers on the structure and function of voluntary muscle and of the kidneys and on the detailed anatomy of the liver. In the kidneys, he found that the capsule (Bowman's capsule) surrounding each glomerulus (ball of capillaries) in the nephrons is a continuous part of the renal duct. This was of prime importance to his filtration theory of urine formation, key to understanding kidney function. Bowman and Todd published The Physiological Anatomy and Physiology of Man (5 vols., 1845-56), a pioneering work in both physiology and histology. Turning to the eye, Bowman became one of the world's foremost ophthalmic research scientists and London's outstanding eye surgeon, and the first to describe several eye structures and their functions.
commando
Military unit consisting of soldiers trained to use guerrilla-like tactics ranging from hand-to-hand combat to hit-and-run raids. It is roughly equivalent to an infantry battalion. A member of such a unit is also called a commando. In common usage, the term may refer to irregular or guerrilla tactics carried out by small regular units.
Fontane
German writer. He began his career as a journalist and wrote books based on his travels before turning to the novel late in life. Before the Storm (1878) is considered a masterpiece of historical fiction. Effi Briest (1895), known for its superb characterizations and skillful portrayal of his native Brandenburg, is one of his several sympathetic treatments of women in circumscribed domestic lives. He is considered the first master of modern German realism.
fontanel
One of six soft spots at the junctions (sutures) of the cranial bones in an infant's skull, covered with tough, fibrous membrane. They allow molding of the head during birth. Some close by three months, others after a year, and still others by two years.
