flamen
One of 15 priests in ancient Rome, each of whom was devoted to the service of a specific god. The most important were those who served Jupiter, Mars, and Quirinus. Chosen from the patrician class and supervised by the pontifex maximus (chief priest), they offered daily sacrifices and led strictly regulated lives. Their wives assisted them and were also bound by ritual regulations. In imperial times a group of flamines were devoted to the worship of deified emperors.

flamenco
Music and dance of the Andalusian Gypsies, or Flamencos, which developed from the 14th cent. onward. Its essence is cante, or song, often accompanied by guitar music and improvised dance. Music and dance fall into three categories: jondo, or grande ("profound," or "grand"), intensely sad and dealing with themes of death, anguish, or religion; intermedio, less profound, but also moving, often with an oriental cast; and chico ("small"), with subjects of love, gaiety, and the countryside. Essential to traditional flamenco is the duende, or possession of the performer by the emotion of the music or dance. Performances are often accompanied by jaleo--intricate hand clapping, finger snapping (often in complex rhythms), and encouraging shouts.
