cacao
Tropical New World tree (Theobroma cacao) of the chocolate family (Sterculiaceae, or Byttneriaceae). Its seeds, after fermentation and roasting, yield cocoa and chocolate. Cocoa butter is extracted from the seed. The tree is grown throughout the wet lowland tropics, often in the shade of taller trees. Its thick trunk supports a canopy of large, leathery, oblong leaves. The small, foul-smelling, pinkish flowers are borne directly on the branches and trunk; they are followed by the fruit, or pods, each yielding 20-40 seeds, or cocoa beans.
face
Front part of the head, extending from the forehead to the chin and housing the eyes, nose, mouth, and jaws. The receding of the jaw and the increasing size of the brain in human evolution has made the face essentially vertical, with two distinctively human features: a prominent, projecting nose and a clearly defined chin. The face and braincase follow different patterns of growth. While the face grows more slowly, it ends up much larger compared to the braincase in adults than at birth. The facial muscles move the features to express emotion.
Fatah
Inverted acronym of Harakat al-Tahrir al-Watani al-Filastini (Palestine National Liberation Movement), which also means "opening" in Arabic. It was founded by Y. Arafat and Khalil al-Wazir in the late 1950s to free Palestine from Israeli control through guerrilla warfare. It eventually became the biggest group within the Palestine Liberation Organization and attacked Israeli interests worldwide. Originally based in Damascus, it moved its headquarters several times under pressure from sympathizers and foes alike. It gave up terrorism in 1993 when Arafat agreed to enter into talks with Israel for a political settlement of Palestinian issues.
Lacan
French psychoanalyst. A practicing psychiatrist in Paris for much of his career, Lacan emphasized the primacy of language as the mirror of the unconscious mind and introduced the study of language into psychoanalytic theory. His major achievement was his reinterpretation of S. Freud's work in terms of structural linguistics. He became a celebrity in France with \u00c9 crits (1966; The Language of the Self) and in the 1970s was a dominant figure in French cultural life as well as a strong influence on Amer. psychoanalytic and literary theory.
Macao
Former Portuguese territory (pop., 1996 est.: 433,000), S coast of China. It consists of a small peninsula projecting from Guangdong province and two small islands, about 40 mi (64 km) west of Hong Kong. It occupies a total land area of 6.5 sq mi (17 sq km); Macao city (pop., 1995 est.: 424,000) is the administrative center. Portuguese traders first arrived in 1513, and it soon became the chief market center for the trade between China and Japan.
