Cabrillo
Explorer in the service of Spain and discoverer of California. Little is known of his early life, though he may have been born in Portugal. In 1520 he accompanied Spanish explorers to Mexico. He was one of the conquerors of present-day Guatemala, where he may have served as governor. In 1542 he left Mexico and sailed along the California coast, entering San Diego and Monterey bays. He landed on several islands off the coast, and apparently died of complications from a broken leg suffered on one such landing.
fabliau
Short metrical tale made popular in medieval France by jongleurs. Fabliaux were characterized by vivid detail and realistic observation and were usually comic, coarse, and cynical, especially in their treatment of women. Though understandable to the bourgeois and common people, they frequently contain an element of burlesque that depends for its appreciation on considerable knowledge of courtly society, love, and manners. About 150 fabliaux survive, by both amateur and professional writers.
Fabre
French entomologist. Largely self-taught, Fabre did important research on three insect orders: bees and wasps (Hymenoptera), beetles (Coleoptera), and grasshoppers and crickets (Orthoptera). On the basis of his observations of the paralyzing actions of wasps in response to stimulating zones in their prey, he described the importance of inherited instinct as a behavior pattern in insects. Fabre wrote many books to popularize science. Though he never accepted the theory of evolution, his work was respected by C. Darwin.
Gabriel
In the Bible, one of the archangels. In the Old Testament he was the heavenly messenger sent to explain Daniel's visions, and in the New Testament he revealed to Zechariah the coming birth of John the Baptist and appeared to Mary in the Annunciation to tell her she was to be the mother of Jesus. In Christian tradition it is believed that he will blow the trumpet on Judgment Day. In the Quran, he is known as Jibril.
Amer. slave who planned the first slave rebellion in U.S. history. Born near Richmond, Va., to an African-born mother, he grew up as the slave of Thomas H. Prosser. In 1800 the deeply religious Gabriel planned a slave insurrection to create an independent slave state in Virginia with himself as king. Intending to attack Richmond and kill all whites except Frenchmen, Methodists, and Quakers, he assembled 1,000 slaves outside the city on August 30, but a violent rainstorm washed out bridges and scattered the rebels. Before they could reassemble, Gov. J. Monroe learned of the plot and ordered out the state militia. Gabriel and 34 others were arrested, tried, and hanged.
