aerosol
System of tiny liquid or solid particles evenly distributed in a finely divided state through a gas, usually air. Aerosol particles participate in chemical processes and influence the electrical properties of the atmosphere. Though true aerosol particles range in diameter from a few millimicrometers to about 1 micrometer, the term is commonly used to refer to fog or cloud droplets and dust particles, which can have diameters of more than 100 micrometers. Ards
District (pop., 1995 est.: 67,000), Northern Ireland. Formerly part of Co. Downs, Ards was established as a district in 1973. Much of its land is devoted to crops and pasture. Newtownards, settled c.1608 by Scots, is its administrative seat and manufacturing center. Donaghadee is a popular resort town.


Ares
Greek god of war. Unlike his Roman counterpart, Mars, his worship was not extensive. From the time of Homer, he was one of the Olympian deities, the son of Zeus and Hera, but disliked by the other gods. His worship occurred largely in N Greece. He was associated from early times with Aphrodite, occasionally portrayed as his legitimate wife and at other times his lover. He was accompanied in battle by his sister Eris (strife) and by two of his children by Aphrodite, Phobos and Deimos (Panic and Rout).


Arles
City (pop., 1991: 53,000), SE France. Occupied and built up by the Romans in the 1st cent. BC, Arles became, through commerce, a leading city of the Roman empire. In the 10th cent. AD it became the capital of Burgundy, known also as the Kingdom of Arles. Portions of the Roman wall around the old town remain, and a Roman arena of the 1st cent. BC is still used for bullfights and plays. The city was home to V. van Gogh during one of his most productive periods. Arles is still a river port, but its economy is based largely on tourism and agriculture.


Barlach
German sculptor, graphic artist, and writer. He studied in Hamburg, Dresden, and Paris. He achieved fame in the 1920s and '30s with the execution of several war memorials for the Weimar Republic. He became an outstanding exponent of German Expressionism, though his prints and sculpture were also strongly influenced by medieval German wood carving. He also wrote Expressionist plays, which he illustrated with woodcuts and lithographs. His studio at G\u00fc strow was opened posthumously as a museum.


barley
Cereal plant of the genus Hordeum, in the family Poaceae (or Gramineae), and its edible grain. The three cultivated species are Hordeum vulgare, H. distichum, and H. irregulare. Barley is adaptable to a greater range of climate than any other cereal. About half of the world's crop is used as livestock feed, the rest for human food and for malting.
