Fennel-like annual or biennial herb (Anethum graveolens) of the parsley family, or its dried, ripe fruit, or seeds, and leafy tops, which are used to season foods, particularly in E Europe and Scandinavia. Native to Mediterranean countries and SE Europe, dill is now widely cultivated in Europe, India, and N. America. The entire plant is aromatic, and the small stems and immature umbels are used for flavoring food. Dill has a warm, slightly sharp flavor.
