dace
Any of various small, slim, active freshwater fishes of the carp family (Cyprinidae). In England and Europe, the dace (Leuciscus leuciscus), a relative of the European chub, inhabits streams and rivers. It is a small-headed, silvery fish that grows to 10-12 in. (25-30 cm) long and weighs 1-1.5 lbs (0.5-0.7 kg). It lives in schools and eats plant and animal material. It is a good bait and sport fish but is not highly valued as food. In N. America, the name is applied to various small cyprinids found in creeks and bogs, mostly in the central and S U.S.


Hafez
Persian poet. The recipient of a traditional religious education (Hafez designates someone who has learned the Quran by heart), he served as court poet to several rulers of Shiraz. He perfected the ghazel as a verse form of 6-15 couplets linked by unity of subject and symbolism rather than by a logical sequence of ideas. His poems are notable for their simple, often colloquial, musical language and his unaffected use of homely images and proverbial expressions. His most famous work is the Divan. He is regarded as one of the greatest Persian lyric poets.


adze
Hand tool for shaping wood. A handheld stone chipped to form a blade, it is one of the earliest tools, and was used widely in the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. By Egyptian times, it had acquired a wooden haft (handle) with a copper or bronze blade set flat at the top of the haft to form a T. In this form but with a steel blade, it continued to be the prime hand tool for shaping and trimming wood; the carpenter stands on or astride a log or other piece of timber, swinging the adze like a pick, down and between the legs.


Ake
Nigerian political scientist and activist. He received his PhD from Columbia Univ. in 1966. He founded the Center for Advanced Social Science in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and was active in efforts to uncover environmental and human-rights abuses by the Nigerian government. His books on African development and politics made him one of Africa's leading political scientists. He served as a consultant to Royal Dutch/Shell Group, but angrily resigned in 1995 to protest the execution of the activist K. Saro-Wiwa. He died the next year in a plane crash, whose cause has been disputed.


ale
Fermented malt beverage, full-bodied and somewhat bitter, with strong flavor of hops. Until the 17th cent. it was an unhopped brew of yeast, water, and malt, beer being the same brew with hops added. Modern ale (now largely synonymous with beer) is made with top-fermenting yeast and processed at higher temperatures than lager beer. Pale ale has up to 5% alcohol content; the darker strong ale contains up to 6.5%.
