aconite
Any member of two genera of perennial herbaceous plants of the buttercup family: Aconitum (monkshood or wolfsbane), consisting of summer-flowering poisonous plants, and Eranthis (winter aconite), consisting of spring-flowering ornamentals. The dried tuberous root of A. napellus was formerly used as a sedative and a painkiller.
Dacia
Ancient country, central Europe. Roughly equivalent to modern Romania, the area's earliest known inhabitants were Getae and Dacian people of Thracian stock. Known for its rich silver, iron, and gold mines, the region was made a Roman province in AD 107 after two centuries of hostilities. It was abandoned to the Goths in 270 and ultimately divided into the principalities of Walachia and Moldavia.
Davout
French general in the Napoleonic Wars. Despite his noble origins, in 1790 he led his regiment in a pro-Revolutionary revolt and he performed with merit in the Belgian campaign of 1792-93. He accompanied Napoleon to Egypt (1798-99) and was promoted to division general. As a corps commander, he had a significant impact on the victories at Austerlitz (1805), Auerstedt (1806), Jena (1806), Eylau (1807), Eckm\u00fc hl (1809), and Wagram (1809). Created a duke (1808) and prince (1809) by Napoleon, Davout served as minister of war during the Hundred Days.
Lacoste
French tennis player and sportswear entrepreneur. Born in Paris, he became noted for a methodical game in which he tried to outlast his opponents. He won the Wimbledon (1925, 1928) and French (1925, 1927, 1929) singles, and became the first foreigner to win the U.S. championship twice (1926, 1927), the second time beating B. Tilden. He also won various doubles matches. Nicknamed "the crocodile," he retired in 1929 to form a sportswear company that featured a crocodile (later alligator) emblem on its clothes.
