Bacolod
City (pop., 1994 est.: 343,000), Philippine Islands. It lies on the Guimaras Strait in the north of the island of Negros, opposite Guimaras Island. It is regarded as the Philippine sugar capital. Its port, to the south, is important for fishing.
Camelot
In Arthurian legend, the seat of King Arthur's court. It has been variously identified with Caerleon in Wales, Queen Camel in Somerset, Camelford in Cornwall, Winchester in Hampshire, and Cadbury Castle in Somerset. Camelot has come to symbolize a short-lived golden era under a beloved leader.
dace
Any of various small, slim, active freshwater fishes of the carp family (Cyprinidae). In England and Europe, the dace (Leuciscus leuciscus), a relative of the European chub, inhabits streams and rivers. It is a small-headed, silvery fish that grows to 10-12 in. (25-30 cm) long and weighs 1-1.5 lbs (0.5-0.7 kg). It lives in schools and eats plant and animal material. It is a good bait and sport fish but is not highly valued as food. In N. America, the name is applied to various small cyprinids found in creeks and bogs, mostly in the central and S U.S.
Danelaw
NE region of Anglo-Saxon England. Colonized by invading Danish armies in the late 9th cent. AD, it was so named because the form of customary law practiced in the local courts was of Danish origin. Danish place-names still mark the region.
Danilova
Russian-U.S. dancer and teacher, instrumental in bringing classical and modern Russian repertoires to the U.S. She attended the Imperial Ballet school in St. Petersburg and became a soloist at the Mariinsky Theater. In 1924 she joined the Ballets Russes. From 1938 to 1952 she danced with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, touring worldwide as its prima ballerina. She created leading roles in The Triumph of Neptune, Ga\u00ee t\u00e9 Parisienne, Swan Lake, and Copp\u00e9 lia. After retiring in 1957, she became a full-time faculty member at the School of Amer. Ballet (1964-89).
Macleod
Scottish physiologist. He taught in U.S., Canadian, and Scottish universities, becoming noted for his work on carbohydrate metabolism. With F. Banting and C. Best he discovered insulin, an achievement for which he and Banting shared a Nobel Prize in 1923.
