Cabola
Legendary pueblos of splendor and riches sought by Spanish conquistadors in N. America during the 16th cent. They were first reported by A. Cabeza de Vaca, who was shipwrecked off Florida in 1528 and who wandered through what later became Texas and N Mexico before his rescue in 1536. Expeditions sent to search for the cities were unsuccessful; one led by F. de Coronado in 1540 located a group of pueblos but failed to find vast treasures.


Deborah
Prophetess and political leader of ancient Israel. Her story is told in the Old Testament's Book of Judges. With her general, Barak, she is credited with defeating the Canaanite armies led by Sisera. The Israelite victory over the Canaanites, which was aided by a thunderstorm that Israel saw as the coming of God from Mt. Sinai, was celebrated in the Song of Deborah (Judges 5), possibly the earliest portion of the Bible.


Kaloyan
Czar of Bulgaria (1197-1207). Having received his crown from the pope, he led a Bulgarian-Greek uprising in the Balkan Peninsula that defeated the Latin crusaders at Adrianople (1205) and took Baldwin I, the Latin emperor, prisoner. Kaloyan's alliance with the Greeks fell apart, and he died besieging Thessaloniki.


Mboya
Kenyan political leader. During the Mau Mau rebellion (1952-56) and the period leading up to Kenyan independence (1963), the Oxford-educated Mboya headed the Kenya Federation of Labor. In 1960 he helped found the dominant Kenyan African National Union Party (KANU). Following independence, he served in top administrative posts in J. Kenyatta's government. His assassination in 1969 shocked the nation and exacerbated tensions between the dominant Kikuyu and other ethnic groups, especially Mboya's own Luo.


Nagoya
City (pop., 1995: 2,152,000), S Honshu, Japan. Located east of Kyoto, at the head of Ise Bay, it is one of Japan's leading industrial cities. Manufactures include textiles, watches, bicycles, sewing machines, machine tools, chemicals, and ceramics. The city dates from 1610, when a great castle was erected by the Owari branch of the Tokugawa shogunate; the castle was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in 1959. The city's educational and cultural institutions include Nagoya Univ. and the Tokugawa Art Museum. The Atsuta Shrine and the Ise Shrine located there are the oldest and most highly esteemed Shinto shrines in Japan.


Saroyan
U.S. writer. Born in Fresno, Cal., Saroyan was the largely self-educated son of an Armenian immigrant. He made his initial impact during the Depression with brash, original, and irreverent stories celebrating the joy of living in spite of poverty, hunger, and insecurity. Much of his fiction is based on his childhood and family. His story collections include The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze (1934), Inhale and Exhale (1936), and My Name is Aram (1940).
