Cabola
Legendary pueblos of splendor and riches sought by Spanish conquistadors in N. America during the 16th cent. They were first reported by A. Cabeza de Vaca, who was shipwrecked off Florida in 1528 and who wandered through what later became Texas and N Mexico before his rescue in 1536. Expeditions sent to search for the cities were unsuccessful; one led by F. de Coronado in 1540 located a group of pueblos but failed to find vast treasures.


Dacia
Ancient country, central Europe. Roughly equivalent to modern Romania, the area's earliest known inhabitants were Getae and Dacian people of Thracian stock. Known for its rich silver, iron, and gold mines, the region was made a Roman province in AD 107 after two centuries of hostilities. It was abandoned to the Goths in 270 and ultimately divided into the principalities of Walachia and Moldavia.


dahlia
Any of the 12-20 species of tuberous-rooted herbaceous plants that make up the genus Dahlia, in the composite family, native to higher elevations of Mexico and Central America. The leaves of most are segmented and toothed or cut. About six species have been bred for cultivation as ornamental flowers. Wild species have both disk and ray flowers in the flowering heads, but many varieties of ornamentals, such as the common garden dahlia (D. bipinnata), have shortened ray flowers. Dahlia flowers may be white, yellow, red, or purple.


Dalriada
Ancient kingdom, NE Ireland. Known from the 5th cent. AD, it included the N part of the present Co. Antrim in Northern Ireland and part of the Inner Hebrides and Argyll in Scotland. Earlier, Argyll had received N Irish people known as Scoti, and had become an Irish (i.e. "Scottish") area. In the late 5th cent. the rulers of Irish Dalriada expanded into Scottish Dalriada. Irish Dalriada gradually declined, while the Dalriada of the Scottish mainland continued to expand. In the mid-9th cent. the Picts were brought permanently under Dalriadic rule, and the area was thereafter known as Scotland.


Deborah
Prophetess and political leader of ancient Israel. Her story is told in the Old Testament's Book of Judges. With her general, Barak, she is credited with defeating the Canaanite armies led by Sisera. The Israelite victory over the Canaanites, which was aided by a thunderstorm that Israel saw as the coming of God from Mt. Sinai, was celebrated in the Song of Deborah (Judges 5), possibly the earliest portion of the Bible.
