Chicherin
Russian diplomat. An aristocrat by birth, he entered the imperial diplomatic service in 1897 but resigned to join the revolutionary movement and the Menshevik faction (1905). In 1918 he joined the Bolsheviks and resumed his diplomatic career, helping negotiate the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. As people's commissar for foreign affairs (1918-28), he led the Soviet delegation to the Genoa Conference and later secretly negotiated the Treaty of Rapallo with Germany.
Chichester
Town (pop., 1995 est: 28,000; metro area pop.: 103,000), England. Located northeast of Portsmouth, it is the county seat of W. Sussex. The basic plan of the Roman town is preserved in the modern city. The area is mainly residential and agricultural. Chichester is noted for its early Norman cathedral, begun in the late 11th cent., and for its pastoral landscapes.
Chippewa
Engagement in the War of 1812 that restored U.S. military morale. After U.S. troops under W. Scott captured Ft. Erie, N.Y., they began to push north into Canada. A British force marched south from Ft. George and attacked them at Chippewa. The British were defeated, suffering 604 casualties to the U.S.'s 335.
