calabash
Tree (Crescentia cujete) of the trumpet-creeper family (Bignoniaceae) that grows in Central and S. America, the W. Indies, and extreme S Florida. It is often grown as an ornamental. It produces large spherical fruits, the hard shells of which are useful as bowls, cups, and other water containers when hollowed out. The fruit's shell encloses a whitish pulp and thin, dark brown seeds. The tree bears funnel-shaped, light green and purple-streaked flowers and evergreen leaves. Fruits of the unrelated bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) are also known as calabashes.


Caracas
City (pop. 1992: 1,965,000; metro. area pop.: 2,784,000), capital of Venezuela. Its Caribbean port is La Guaira. Lying at an altitude of about 3,000 ft (9,000 m), it is one of the most developed cities in Latin America. It was founded in 1567 by Diego de Losada; in 1595 it was sacked by the English. It was the birthplace of S. Bol\u00ed var (1783), under whose leadership it became the first colony to revolt from Spain (c.1810). Caracas has become the country's primary center of industry, commerce, education, and culture.


Varanasi
City (pop., 1995 est.: 1,000,000), Uttar Pradesh, India. Located on the Ganges River in SE Uttar Pradesh, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and was the site of an Aryan settlement before the 2nd millennium BC. It is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism and has numerous shrines, temples, and palaces, and miles of steps for ritual bathing. More than a million Hindus visit the city each year. Just north of Varanasi is Sarnath, where the Buddha delivered his first sermon.
