Cabola
Legendary pueblos of splendor and riches sought by Spanish conquistadors in N. America during the 16th cent. They were first reported by A. Cabeza de Vaca, who was shipwrecked off Florida in 1528 and who wandered through what later became Texas and N Mexico before his rescue in 1536. Expeditions sent to search for the cities were unsuccessful; one led by F. de Coronado in 1540 located a group of pueblos but failed to find vast treasures.

Fruits of the unrelated bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) are also known as calabashes.

U.S. soprano. Born in New York City, she moved to Greece as a teenager and made her debut there in 1939. She became an international star in La Gioconda at the 1947 Verona Festival. She continued to sing heavy dramatic roles, incl. G. Puccini's Turandot and R. Wagner's Kundry, until the conductor Tullio Serafin (1878-1968) convinced her to shift to the bel canto repertoire, in which she became immortal. Her acclaimed roles included V. Bellini's Norma, L. Though her voice lacked great beauty, her artistic integrity, vivid stage presence, striking features, and fiery temperament made her the most famous opera star in the world.

Spanish (Catalan)-U.S. cellist and conductor. He received early instruction from his organist father, and took up the cello and composition in his teens. Sent by royal sponsors to the Brussels Conservatory in 1895, he was told they could teach him nothing. An audition with the conductor Charles Lamoureux (1850-1899) in 1899 led to recognition as a supreme musician. He performed internationally as soloist, in a trio with Alfred Cortot (1877-1962) and Jacques Thibaud (1880-1953), and from the 1920s as a conductor. Refusing to return to Spain after F.
