Bangor
Town (pop., 1981: 47,000), seat of North Down district, Northern Ireland. It lies on the S shore of Belfast Lough, 12 mi (19 km) northeast of Belfast. St. Comgall founded a monastery at Bangor c.555, which became a celebrated seat of learning. The town was sacked by the Danes in the 9th cent.; it was partially rebuilt by St. Malachy in the 12th cent. It is now a seaside resort.
Indore
City (pop., 1991: 1,110,000), W Madhya Pradesh state, central India. Located northeast of Bombay, it was founded in 1715 as a trade market by local landowners, who erected Indreshwar Temple, from which the city's name is derived. It became the capital of the princely state of Indore belonging to the Maratha Holkars. Under the British, it served as the headquarters of the British Central India Agency. The largest city in the state, it is an important commercial and industrial center.
Pandora
In Greek mythology, the first woman. After Prometheus stole fire from heaven and bestowed it on mortals, Zeus decided to counteract this blessing and commissioned Hephaestus to fashion a woman out of earth, upon whom the gods bestowed their choicest gifts. After marrying Prometheus' brother, Pandora opened a jar containing all kinds of misery and evil, which escaped and flew out over the earth. In one version, Hope alone remained inside, the lid having been shut before she could escape.
