Tabasco
State (pop., 1995 est.: 1,747,000), SE Mexico. It covers an area of 9,522 sq mi (24,662 sq km); its capital is Villahermosa. Pre-Columbian Indian cultures included those of the Quich\u00e9 , Olmec, Tabasca, and Nahua. The area was first visited by Europeans in 1518; in 1519 H. Cort\u00e9 s first clashed with the Indians, who were partially subdued in the 1530s and 1540s. It became a state in 1824. Agriculture, forestry, beekeeping, fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, and cattle-raising provided much of the state's income before petroleum exploitation began in the 1960s. The state now has over 30 oil fields.
Belasco
U.S. theatrical producer and playwright. Born in San Francisco, he acted with traveling companies before becoming a theater manager, first in San Francisco and later in New York (from 1880). An independent producer from 1890, he built his own theater in 1906; there he introduced changes in stage lighting, used realistic scenery, and demanded high production standards. He successfully fought against the monopolistic Theatrical Syndicate. He wrote or collaborated on numerous plays, incl. Madame Butterfly (1900) and The Girl of the Golden West (1905), which became operas by G. Puccini.
