arhat
In Buddhism, one who has gained insight into the true nature of existence, has achieved nirvana, and will not be reborn again. Theravada Buddhism regards becoming an arhat as the goal of spiritual progress. It holds that a seeker must pass through three earlier stages before being reborn in a heaven as an arhat. Mahayana Buddhism criticizes the goal of becoming an arhat and considers the bodhisattva to be a higher goal. This divergence of opinion is one of the fundamental differences between Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism.


arrastra
Drag-stone mill for pulverizing ores to isolate silver by the patio process, apparently used in pre-Columbian America. The silver ore was crushed and ground by mule power in the arrastras (shallow circular pits paved with stone). Large blocks of stone attached by beams to a central rotating post were dragged around the arrastra, reducing the ore to a fine mud. Further steps resulted in the isolating of the silver.


Artaud
French poet, actor, and drama theorist. He wrote surrealist poetry from 1925 and made his acting debut in surrealist productions in Paris. He described his theory of drama in the Manifesto of the Theatre of Cruelty (1932) (see theater of cruelty) and The Theatre and Its Double (1938). His own plays (incl. Les Cenci, 1935) were failures, but his theories exerted great influence on playwrights of the theater of the absurd. Lifelong mental illness confined him periodically to asylums from 1936.
