Ansar
(Arabic: "Helper") Term originally applied to some of the Companions of the Prophet. When Muhammad left Mecca for Medina, the Ansar were the Medinese who aided him and who became his devoted followers, serving in his army. The term was revived in the 19th cent. to refer to the followers of al-Mahdi, al-Mahdi's successor, or his descendants.
Anshan
City (pop., 1990: 1,204,000), Liaoning province, NE China. Established as a post station in 1387, it was fortified in 1587 as part of the defenses set up by the Ming dynasty against the rising power of the Manchus. It was destroyed by fire during the Boxer Rebellion and badly damaged during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5). In the 1930s the Japanese occupied Anshan and made it a steelmaking center. The city was bombed by U.S. aircraft in 1944 and looted by the Soviets following World War II. The Chinese later redeveloped it into an industrial center that produces steel, cement, and chemicals.
City and territory of ancient Elam, north of modern Shiraz, Iran. Anshan came to prominence c.2350 BC, but its greatest period was in the 13th-12th cent. BC, when, as kings of Anshan and Susa, Elamite rulers periodically raided the cities of Babylonia. The area apparently came under the control of Persia c.675 BC. Its ruins have yielded major finds, incl. examples of early Elamite writing.
Ahsai
Founder of the heterodox Shiite Muslim Shaykhi sect of Iran. Born in Arabia, he traveled widely in Persia and the Middle East. In 1808 he settled in Yazd, Persia, where he attracted followers with his interpretation of Shia. He claimed knowledge from visions of Muhammad and the imams, and contended that the imams were originally beings of divine light who participated in the creation of the world. Orthodox Shiite theologians excommunicated him in 1824; he died two years later on pilgrimage to Mecca, but the Shaykhi sect survived him.
Allah
(Arabic: "God") Standard Arabic word for God, used by Arab Christians as well as by Muslims. According to the Quran, Allah is the creator and judge of mankind, omnipotent, compassionate, and merciful. The Muslim profession of faith affirms that there is no god but Allah and emphasizes that he is inherently one: "nothing is like unto him." Everything that happens occurs by his commandment; submission to God is the basis of Islam. The Quran and the Hadith contain the 99 "most beautiful names" of God, incl. the One and Only, the Living One, the Real Truth, the Hearer, the Seer, the Benefactor, and the Constant Forgiver.
