Possible definitions for ahmadi

Ahmadiya
Modern Islamic sect, founded in India in 1889 by M. Ghulam Ahmad. It holds that Jesus feigned death and resurrection and escaped to India, and that jihad is a peaceful battle against nonbelievers. Following the death of Ghulam Ahmad's successor (1914), the Ahmadiya split. The Qadianis, based in Rabwah, Pakistan, recognize Ghulam Ahmad as a prophet; they are zealous missionaries, preaching Ahmadi beliefs as the one true Islam. A Lahore-based sect regards Ghulam Ahmad merely as a reformer and seeks to make converts to Islam generally. The term Ahmadiya is also used to describe various Sufi orders (see Sufism), particularly that founded by Ahmad al-Badawi (d.1276). One of the most popular orders in Egypt, it has branches throughout the Islamic world.

Ahsai
Founder of the heterodox Shiite Muslim Shaykhi sect of Iran. Born in Arabia, he traveled widely in Persia and the Middle East. In 1808 he settled in Yazd, Persia, where he attracted followers with his interpretation of Shia. He claimed knowledge from visions of Muhammad and the imams, and contended that the imams were originally beings of divine light who participated in the creation of the world. Orthodox Shiite theologians excommunicated him in 1824; he died two years later on pilgrimage to Mecca, but the Shaykhi sect survived him.

Amado
Brazilian novelist. Born and reared on a cacao plantation, he published his first novel at 20. His early works, incl. The Violent Land (1942), explore the exploitation and suffering of plantation workers. Despite imprisonment and exile for leftist activities, he continued to produce novels, many of which have been banned in Brazil and Portugal. Later works such as Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon (1958), Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1966), and The War of the Saints (1993) preserve Amado's political attitude in their more subtle satire.

Arcadia
Ancient country, central Peloponnese, Greece. Mountainous and landlocked, it was not overrun by the Dorians during their occupation of Greece (1100-1000 BC). Its isolation and its pastoral character partly explain why it was represented as a paradise in Greek and Roman bucolic poetry. It was the scene of conflict during the War of Greek Independence (1821-29). The modern Greek department of Arkadhí a is nearly coextensive with the ancient country.

Armani
Italian fashion designer. He abandoned medical school and worked as a buyer for a department store (1957-64) before training as a fashion designer. In 1974-75 he introduced his own label of ready-to-wear for men and women. In 1980-81 he founded Giorgio Armani USA, Emporio Armani, and Armani Jeans, and in 1989 he opened shops in London. He was a leader in the pared-down, unstructured silhouette in menswear and was responsible for the wide-shouldered look for executive women.
