Possible definitions for afrasia
abrasives
Sharp, hard materials used to wear away the surface of softer, less resistant materials. Abrasives are indispensable to the manufacture of the highly precise components and ultrasmooth surfaces required in the manufacture of automobiles, airplanes and space vehicles, mechanical and electrical appliances, and machine tools. Abrasives may be natural (e.g., diamond, corundum, emery) or synthetic (e.g., silicon carbide or Carborundum, synthetic diamond, alumina--a synthetic form of corundum). They range from the relatively soft particles used in household cleansers and jeweler's polish to diamonds.
aphasia
Brain-generated defect in saying words, unrelated to physical ability to produce sounds. Symptoms vary with the brain area involved: the ability to say words in a specific category or to put words in a meaningful order may be lost. The term also covers related disturbances, incl. agraphia (inability to write) and agnosias (perceptual aphasias, inability to recognize what is perceived through one of the senses; e.g., dyslexia). Aphasias show that the apparent unity of "the mind" rests on the interaction of independent parts of the brain.
apraxia
Disturbance in carrying out skilled acts, caused by a lesion in the cerebral cortex; motor power and mental capacity remain intact. Motor apraxia is the inability to perform fine motor acts. Ideational apraxia is loss of the ability to plan even a simple action. In ideokinetic apraxia, there is no coordination between formation of ideas and motor activity; affected persons can do certain things automatically but not deliberately. Constructional apraxia is the inability to put together elements to form a meaningful whole.
Aspasia
Mistress of Pericles and a vivid figure in Athenian society. Originally from Miletus, she lived with Pericles from c.445 BC until his death in 429. Because she was not a citizen, their son was initially denied civic rights. Though an intellectual admired by Socrates, she endured public attacks, especially in comic theater, for her private life and her supposed influence on Pericles' foreign policy.
