apse
Semicircular or polygonal termination to the choir, chancel (see cathedral), or aisle of a public building, first used in pre-Christian Roman architecture. Originally a large niche to hold the statue of a deity in a temple, the apse also appeared in ancient baths and basilicas. The domed apse became a standard part of the Christian church plan.


base
In chemistry, any substance that in water solution is slippery to the touch, tastes bitter, changes the color of acid-base indicators (e.g., litmus paper), reacts with acids to form salts, and promotes certain chemical reactions (e.g., base catalysis). Examples of bases are the hydroxides of the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals (sodium, calcium, etc.) and the water solutions of ammonia or its derivatives (amines). Basel
City (pop., 1996: 174,000; metro. area pop.: 404,000), NW Switzerland. It straddles the Rhine at the point where France, Germany, and Switzerland meet. It was originally a settlement of the Celtic Rauraci tribe. Its university, the first in Switzerland, was founded by Pope Pius II while attending the Council of Basel (1431-49). In 1501 Basel was admitted into the Swiss Confederation. When D. Erasmus taught at the university 1521-29, the city became a center of humanism and of the Reformation. Primarily German-speaking and Protestant, it is an important trading and industrial city and river port.


CASE
Use of computers in designing sophisticated tools to aid the software engineer and to automate the software development process as much as possible. It is particularly useful where major software products are designed by teams of engineers who may not share the same physical space. CASE tools can be used for simple operations such as routine coding from an appropriately detailed design in a specific programming language, or for more complex tasks such as incorporating an expert system to enforce design rules and eliminate software defects and redundancies before the coding phase.


Hasek
Czech writer. He published 16 volumes of short stories before World War I, when he became a prisoner of war. After his release he devoted himself to writing a six-volume war novel, The Good Soldier Schweik, but died after completing only four volumes (published 1921-23). Even in its incomplete state, it is considered one of the world's masterpieces of satire.
