Possible definitions for aals

Aalto
Finnish architect and designer. He graduated from the Technical Institute of Helsinki, and in 1925 married Aino Marsio (d.1949), who served as his collaborator. His reputation rests on a distinctive style that blends classic modernism, indigenous materials (especially timber), and personal expression. His unique blending of modernism and informal regional character was perhaps best expressed in his civic center at S\u00e4 yn\u00e4 tsalo (1950-52), with its simple forms in red brick, wood, and copper. He remains one of the Modern movement's most popular architects; reproductions of his bent laminated wood furniture appear in households worldwide.

balsa
Tree (Ochroma pyramidale, or O. lagopus) of the bombax family (Bombacaceae), native to tropical S. America and noted for its extremely light wood, which resembles clear white pine or basswood. Because of its buoyancy (about twice that of cork), balsa is well adapted for making floats for lifelines and life preservers. Its resiliency makes it an excellent shock-absorbing packing material. Its insulating properties make it a good lining material for incubators, refrigerators, and cold-storage rooms. Because it combines lightness and high insulating power, it is a valuable construction material for transportation containers for solidified carbon dioxide. It is also used in the construction of airplane passenger compartments and in model airplanes and boats.

Hals
Dutch portrait painter. Born in Antwerp, he spent his life in Haarlem, where he was registered as a master by the Guild of St. Luke in 1610. His group portraits of members of local guilds and military societies, notably the monumental Banquet of Officers of the Civic Guard of St. George (1616), were painted with a technique close to Impressionism in its looseness, unique in Dutch art at the time. He introduced a jovial spirit that revolutionized portraiture and set him apart from his contemporaries. His subjects exude joie de vivre, with an occasional hint of sadness. After 1650 he portrayed elderly people who nervously display the spark of life even as it flickers; these portraits, such as The Women Regents of the Almshouse at Haarlem (1664), are his masterpieces. His work greatly influenced E. Manet, V. van Gogh, and R. Henri.

salsa
(Spanish: "sauce") Contemporary Latin-Amer. dance music. Salsa developed in Cuba in the 1940s, drawing on local musical styles such as charanga (featuring primarily strings and flute) and the dance music of the conjuntos (bands), which included vocals, trumpet, and African percussion instruments, and blending in elements of jazz. In the 1950s salsa began to flourish in New York, where it incorporated traditional Puerto Rican rhythms, and later elements from Venezuelan and Colombian music and rhythm and blues as well. Its stars have included C. Cruz, T. Puente, and Willie Colon.
